Also, needed to login to docker as instructed. but also again install it (or start the docker) by double clicking the Docker app in application folder. As soon as the whale icon appears, the symbolic links for docker, docker-compose, docker-credential-osxkeychain and docker-machine are created in /usr/local/bin. In my case, the issue was that I just not have to just install the Docker app on mac. If not, Homebrew can be installed by following the instructions here. If a version number is returned, then Homebrew is installed. The following command should return a version number. Press + Space to bring up Spotlight Search and enter Docker to launch Docker. Running the Docker app for the first time creates this symbolic link. The first step is to check that Homebrew is installed. Note that after brew installs Docker, the docker command (symbolic link) is not available at /usr/local/bin.

The context of my brew-not-recognized-anymore problem is a bit more specific: I'm using iTerm instead of Terminal, I installed brew in the standard way to the standard place, I used brew to install zsh and oh-my-zsh, and at that point the brew command stopped working. The easiest way to install go-ethereum is to use the Geth Homebrew tap. When Docker is launched in this manner, a Docker whale icon appears in the status menu. I had the same probleminstalled brew, used it, but now it doens't work, ie, brew command not recognized anymore.

Note that after brew installs Docker, the docker command (symbolic link) is not available at /usr/local/bin. The following steps work fine on macOS Sierra 10.12.4.
